Julia Keevy
My career in ceramics began whilst studying ceramic design in South Africa at the Port Elizabeth Technikon in 1992. After graduating, I started a small business creating decorative tiles, mosaic and decorative pieces for homes and interiors. In 2001 I was recruited to lecture at the Nelson Mandela Metro University ceramic department, where I lectured till 2011. During this time, besides teaching, I continued to create and manufacture many pieces that are scattered all over the world today.
In Mauritius I have started making ceramics again as an active creative outlet for my personal endeavor. My inspiration has always come from nature and what I am surrounded by. The colours I use are usually chosen for their vibrancy, contrast and to enhance the texture of the clay. The immediacy of the process is an integral part of the final product. Seeing the markings in the clay and being able to see and touch a raw part of the clay body allows the piece to speak of its true nature which is of the earth.
Rachel McLaughlin
Originally from Yorkshire, specialises in pit and drum/barrel firing. Has worked as a studio member in potteries in Panama, New York and the UK.
Stephanie Desvaux Le Juge
Born in Mauritius, Stéphanie Desvaux Le Juge began her artistic career at the age of twelve with her first camera. Her passion for photography led her to collaborate with Tristan Bréville at the Museum of Photography in the 1990s. In 1994, her talents were recognized by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, which selected four of her black and white photographs for their collection. Stéphanie Desvaux Le Juge champions an authentic and unique artistic approach, guided by her intuition. Her commitment to her art is manifested through a meditative and organic practice, where each creation is the fruit of deep reflection on the world around her.
